This retaining ring can be installed at the bottom of M42x1 helicoid thread to press a lens aperture pin if the lens has automatic mode only.

As you can see on the sample photos, installing the ring allows stepping the lens down.

WARNING: it is not suitable for infinity providing adapters since you will not be able to screw the lens fully, and infinity focus will be lost.
